Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center Offers Colorectal Screenings

Local people 50-75 years old may qualify for a no-charge colorectal cancer FIT (fecal immunochemical test) screening in a program sponsored by the Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center and the Sky Lakes Foundation.

“Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States among men and women combined, yet it is one of the most preventable by getting screened,” says Susan Morton, RN, director of Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center. “We are very happy to make available FIT screenings that involves an at-home stool collection kit for a limited number of individuals who qualify.”

Colorectal cancer usually develops slowly, beginning first as small growths called polyps, which may grow larger and eventually turn into cancer. The entire process of a polyp transforming into cancer usually takes several years. After cancer develops, it grows into the wall of the colon and eventually spreads. Often, this process is preventable with proper screening.
