KCC to Host Workshop that will Help Agriculture Businesses Plan for the Future

KLAMATH FALLS – Community members are invited to attend a free farm succession workshop aimed at helping family agriculture businesses plan for the future.

The workshop is Saturday, March 10, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Klamath Community College in Building 6, room H138. A free lunch is included.

“The lack of farm succession plans can have a dramatic effect on a farmer’s family, the future of the business they have built, and their legacy of land,” said longtime Klamath Basin farmer Tracey Liskey. “Having a succession plan in place can reduce the stress and cost of dividing the estate for the family when the owner passes.”

The four-hour workshop is a coordinated effort among the OSU Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center (KBREC), Klamath Community College, Klamath Small Business Development Center, Klamath Watershed Partnership, and Rogue Farm Corps.

Diana Tourney, of the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network, will discuss how farmers and ranchers can work with their families to plan for succession. Attorney Joe Hobson of Schwabe, Williamson and Wyatt, will explain how to prepare an estate for succession. A panel of local farmers and Nellie McAdams, Farm Preservation Program Director at Rogue Farm Corps and Coordinator of OWEB’s new Oregon Agricultural Heritage Program, will also provide information and answer questions at the workshop.

“Implementing a well-planned estate strategy can help with passing a viable farm business to the next generation of owner operators – whether or not they are family members,” said Ian McGregor, a KBREC livestock and irrigation specialist.

This program is made possible by the Klamath/Lake Agriculture Sector Strategy Group in partnership with the East Cascades Workforce Investment Board.
