In a press release, Commissioner Kelley Minty Morris has stated:

Klamath County is committed to protecting the security and confidentiality of all information. Unfortunately, our security protocols recently caught unauthorized activity involving information being accessed without authorization. Klamath County takes this incident very seriously.

On March 14, 2018, Klamath County learned an employee’s network credentials had been compromised through a phishing email with roots in Nigeria. This phishing attempt forwarded all of their incoming email to another email account, which was promptly removed upon learning of this breach.

We have reported this to law enforcement and the county has since put additional measures in place to prevent this type of forward to be made in the future. The county is appropriately addressing this incident, as well as increasing efforts to strengthen our practices and policies.
