Snow levels will drop to between 4000 and 4500 feet Thursday night into Friday morning. Expect 8-12 inches of snow over the Cascades near Crater Lake with 6-8 inches as far south as Lake of the Woods and perhaps upper portions of Mt. Ashland ski road.

With cold air arriving, rain will change to snow east of the Cascades (primarily north of Highway 140). A few inches of snow are possible along highway 97 north of Chiloquin, up around Chemult.

Rain may also change to snow at Siskiyou Summit Friday, but accumulation should be less than an inch. Winter hazard products are in effect. After a break Saturday, another storm system will arrive Saturday night into Sunday. Snow levels will be lower – down to valley floors east of the Cascades and around 3000 feet over the west side and in northern California. This could bring accumulating snow to the higher passes like Siskiyou Summit at the CA/OR border and also near Black Butte Summit near Mount Shasta City. When driving in ice and snow, take it slow! Make sure to carry chains, food, water, blankets, flashlights, medications, and a fully charged phone when traveling.

Lowering snow levels brings snow to the Cascades and east of the Cascades in Oregon Late Thursday afternoon into Friday afternoon

A system will move into the region Thursday. This front will stall over the region and move slowly to the southeast through Saturday morning. Snow levels will lower through the day, lowering to the Cascade passes late Thursday afternoon, and continue to lower to around 3000 feet by Saturday morning.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 5 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 5 PM PDT FRIDAY

  • WHAT...Snow expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the morning commute on Friday. Total snow accumulations of up to 8 inches, with localized amounts up to 12 inches, are expected.
  • WHERE...South Central Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains and Southern Oregon Cascades. Areas include Diamond Lake, Crater Lake, and all Cascade passes north of Howard Prairie.
  • WHEN...5 PM to 5 PM Friday. The heaviest snowfall rates will occur between 2 AM and 11 AM Friday.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Look for reduced visibilities at times.
