ALTURAS, Calif.— Thursday was a good day for Modoc fire personnel to get ahead of the 37 active wildfires on the forest and prepare for possible lightning again this weekend.

“New Initial attack was light yesterday, and resources continue to make good progress on existing fires. Visibility has become limited for our lookouts due to fires burning in Southern Oregon,” said Modoc Interagency Communications Center Manager Charlea Johnston. “We are expecting continued critical fire weather with hot and dry conditions along with a significant grass crop which allows fires to grow rapidly.”

The largest fire on the Modoc National Forest at this time is still the Juniper, burning southeast of Deer Hill Reservoir. It is was mapped yesterday at 79 acres and last report was 30-percent containment. The Tank Fire east of Bayley Tank is still 4.2 acres. Crews are working it as part of the Juniper Fire due to the two fires’ close proximity.

The nearby Pass Fire northwest of Cougar Pass Tank was held at 2.5 acres and was last reported as 80-percent contained.

All of the other fires reported on earlier in the week are contained at this time, including the eight-acre Washington 2 Fire north of Canby.

Fire-safety restrictions are now in place on the Modoc National Forest, meaning campfires are allowed only in designated campgrounds with Forest Service fire rings. Additional restrictions and other information are available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/modoc/alerts-notices.
