Sun, moon and Jupiter observation planned

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – A daytime astronomy event to observe the sun, moon and the planet Jupiter will be offered Sunday morning, Feb. 4, at the Klamath County Museum.

The event runs from 7 to 8 a.m. on the sidewalk in front of the museum at 1451 Main St.

“We expect to get a nice view of the moon as it prepares to set in the western sky,” said museum manager Todd Kepple. “Jupiter is also very bright in our morning sky, so those who come early should be able to see three or four Jupiter’s moons as well as our own moon.”

A morning astronomy event will provide a different view of the earth’s moon than what most people are used to, Kepple said.

“We often schedule our star parties for weekends immediately after a new moon. By scheduling a morning event just after a full moon, we’ll see a different part of the moon’s face, with shadows going in the opposite direction from what we usually see.”

Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars or telescopes if they have them.

A telescope equipped with a solar filter will be available for viewing the sun.
