Coverage of the 2021 Wildfire Season is brought to you by Ace Towing.

CHILOQUIN, Ore. – The Spring Fire is currently burning on the Chiloquin Ranger District of the Fremont-Winema National Forest about 3 miles south of milepost 9 on the Sprague River Highway.

The fire is 21 acres and approximately 50 percent contained. Full containment is expected by the end of the day Saturday. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

While smoke from the fire was visible earlier, it is unlikely it will be highly visible this weekend as the fire is not producing much smoke and there is rain over the area.

Light precipitation this morning and continued rain over the fire today was a welcome relief and helped firefighters with containment efforts. There were five engines, two water tenders, a dozer and a hotshot crew working on the fire today.

This morning, the Fire Danger was raised to “High” for Lake and Klamath Counties. Additionally, the Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) was raised to a Level II.

Even with recent cold and wet weather, fuel conditions are still unseasonably dry and it does not take much to start and carry a wildfire. Winds associated with the changing weather patterns helps spread fire rapidly, regardless of temperature.

The public is asked to use continued vigilance with anything that can spark a wildfire. This includes not driving over grass. The heat from an exhaust pipe is still enough to ignite grass and start a fire.

Anyone going out into wildlands should be aware of their surroundings and prepared with water, a shovel, fire extinguisher and axe. Campfires should never be left unattended and should be dead out and cold to the touch before leaving. If you suspect a wildfire, please report it to 911.
