Historic sites between Fort Klamath and Kimball State Park will be explored during the 13th annual History Fitness Hike on May 4.

The hike coincides with a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Kimball State Park. The event is cosponsored by the Klamath County Museum, the YMCA of Klamath Falls, and Oregon State Parks. Registration deadline is April 26.

Hikers will cover a five-mile route over mostly level ground from the Fort Klamath Museum to Kimball Park.

A $25 fee for the hike includes a lunch, a T-shirt and a bus ride from the parking area to the hike’s starting point.

“Fort Klamath is one of the county’s most historically significant sites, and Kimball Park is one of the county’s most beautiful places,” said Klamath County Museum manager Todd Kepple. “We think hikers will remember this as one of our better hikes.”

Participants will meet at Kimball State Park at 8:30 a.m., and be transported by bus to the Fort Klamath Museum. Brief interpretive talks will be presented at several stops along the hike route.

Sites along the hike route will include the historic Fort Klamath Cemetery, a military fort boundary marker dating to the 1800s, Reservation Spring and Sun Pass State Forest.

Registration forms are available at the Klamath County Museum, 1451 Main St., or can be downloaded from the internet at www.klamathmuseum.org. Registration is available online at kfallsymca.org.

The hike is a rain-or-shine event, with no refunds. Participants are encouraged to walk at a pace that is comfortable for them. The event is recommended only for those capable of walking long distances, although emergency transportation will be available. Dogs are allowed on the hike, but not on the bus.

Oregon State Parks will offer a variety of activities from noon to 3 p.m. May 4 to celebrate the park’s 75th anniversary. The park was established in 1944, and named for Jackson F. Kimball, a local forester and civic leader in the Klamath Basin.
