Red Hawks Down Owls

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech (11-32) fell to Simpson University (17-16) in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Kiger Stadium as the Red Hawk's offense and defense came together in the first game to boost them to an 18-7 victory and held out to win 7-6 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Simpson University 18 Oregon Tech 7
The Red Hawks came out swinging in game one, scoring three runs in the top of the first on a wild pitch, a fly out, and a single. Damien Chavez opened the eighth with a homer, batting in three runs for SU to start them out at a 6-0 lead.
The Owls responded with a Micah Jio homer in the bottom of the third to bat in two runs, but Simpson struck back in the next inning as two doubles scored three runs. Another Chavez homer in the fifth brought the game to 11-2.
A Josh Kallstrom double, and singles from Tristan Shea and Andy Schubert came together in the fifth to earn Oregon Tech four runs to put them within five of the Red Hawks.
However, Simpson cut them short as their pitchers struck out six in the final two innings, keeping the Owls without a run until the end of the seventh when Jio singled to score one.
The Red Hawks, on the other hand, played strong, earning four runs in the sixth off two singles, a double, and a balk and three more in the seventh with two singles and a fly out. Josh Dilg and Chavez each batted in two in the surge, which put SU up 12 at 18-6, ending the game in the seventh inning on the 10-run mercy rule.
Two Simpson pitchers struck out 12 between them, with Reynaldo Gomez taking the win to advance to 3-3 on the season.
Chavez led the Red Hawks to victory, hitting 5-for-5 to bat in seven runs. Nathan Minami contributed another three hits, and Christopher Brue added two to bat in three runs.
For the Hustlin' Owls, Jio hit 4-of-5 to bat in three and Kallstrom hit 3-of-4 to bat in two. Schubert added another two hits.
Simpson outhit Tech 24-12 in the win.
Game 2: Simpson University 7 Oregon Tech 6
The second game was much closer, as the Red Hawks led off by scoring two runs in the top of the first on an error and a ground out. Tech swiftly responded in the bottom of the inning as Shea singled and Austin Zavala scored on an error to tie the score at two.
James Turnbull doubled in the top of the fourth, batting in a run to kick off a surge from Simpson. Three more runs in quick succession put the Red Hawks up by four at 6-2.
Kallstrom homered in the fifth to add one more run, but a Minami double in the top of the sixth kept Simpson's lead strong.
The Owls came together to mount a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on Zavala and Alex Malcolm singles and one more on a wild pitch. Within a single run of tying the game, the Hooters attempt was cut short by the Red Hawk pitcher who struck out the last batter, ending the game.
Gil Loza hit 2-of-3 for Simpson in the game.
Shea hit 3-of-4 to lead Tech's effort, followed by Kallstrom with two hits.
Red Hawk pitcher Paul Gallegos recorded the win and improved to 2-1, while Dylan Lum notched a save.
Both teams hit 10 in the game.
The Hustlin' Owls will be travelling to Vancouver, British Columbia for their next games on Saturday, April 20th and Sunday the 21st, with Saturday's games taking place at 1:00pm and 4:00pm and Sunday's games starting off at 11:00am and 2:00pm.
