Highlights from the week's Recreation Report

Spring wildlife watching

Whales are swimming, frogs are croaking and sandhill cranes are arriving – you don’t need a calendar to know spring is here. With over 600 native species of wildlife in Oregon, it’s impossible to list them all. But here are just a few of the fun sightings from this week’s Recreation Report:

  • Gray whales on the north coast
  • Sandhill cranes in Lake County
  • Pacific tree frogs, alligator lizards and western skinks in Douglas County
  • Violet-green swallows, mountain bluebirds and Swainson’s hawks in Wallowa County.

Best bets for fishing

  • ‘Tis the season for spring Chinook on the Columbia, Willamette, Rogue and Umpqua rivers.
  • The Ana River is putting out limits of 12- to 18-inch trout.
  • Speaking of limits, most ocean anglers have been getting their limits of lingcod.
  • This can be a great time of year to pick up a steelhead on the Imnaha and Umatilla rivers.
  • Trout stocking in dozens of places – check the zone reports for locations

Be ALERT to fishing regulation changes

Fishing regulations can change during the season, especially during popular salmon seasons. To stay on top of the changes, click the yellow ALERT button at the top of the home and Fishing landing pages. You also can check for any regulation updates at the top of each zone of the Recreation Report. (Columbia River spring Chinook seasons are here.)

Report late season hunts

Hunters with tags valid for Jan. 1-March 31 have until April 15 to report on their tag. There are several ways to report, including online.

2018 trout stocking schedule

It’s easy to find a trout stocking location near you using our new interactive stocking schedule. Filter by zone or date, or search for a specific waterbody. A link to the 2018 stocking schedule for each place listed in the weekly Recreation Report is now included at the bottom of each update.
