Shasta Elementary School’s new principal spending summer repainting offices, cafeteria

Randy Rose, new principal at Shasta Elementary School, has spent the last month painting – and he’s not done yet.

Since mid-June, he has been repainting the school’s main offices and last week, with help from Vice Principal Ruben Paschal, was finishing up the cafeteria.

Plans are to hire local artist Robert Terrell to paint mural of Mt. Shasta on the far wall behind the stage.

“I just take a lot of pride in my school,” Rose said Wednesday, standing on a ladder to reach the high walls of the cafeteria. “If kids and staff have a sense of pride, they do better in every aspect of their education.”

Rose started his education career at Mazama High School, his alma mater, teaching health and P.E. He worked the last 12 years as the school’s dean of students and assistant principal.

Rose’s philosophy and vision center around what he calls the Three Cs – climate, character and community. The painting is part of creating a positive climate. The school also has strong community support in its booster club.

“I want kids to understand their character needs to be their identity,” he said. “It’s not what clothes you wear or how much money your parents make.”

Paschal will start his third year as vice principal at Shasta and he’s excited about the coming year. “He’s a hands-on guy,” he said of Rose. “We’re both ‘red’ personalities -- let’s get stuff done.”
