Klamath Outdoor Science School (KOSS) is offering a full slate of outdoor camps for children and youth in July, beginning with a new Backpacking 101 camp for 10-14 year olds, July 8-10. This camp is led by KOSS board member and 4th grade teacher, Rebecca Morehouse, an experienced backpacker. She will be assisted by US Forest Service naturalist, Eva Jones.

Morehouse and Jones will teach budding backpackers how to pitch a tent, use a map and compass, prepare creek water for safe consumption, cook a meal over a tiny backpack stove, as well as wilderness safety and Leave No Trace principles.

The first day will be spent in and near the KOSS camp in Sun Pass State Forest, where participants will learn how to pack a backpack, build a fire in the camp’s fire pit, and other skills. Campers will sleep in yurts the first night, and set out on a hike after breakfast the second day, spending the second night in backpacking tents near a creek.

Campers will need to bring a mini-flashlight or headlamp and two sturdy water bottles, but all other backpacking equipment will be provided, although participants may bring any of their own backpacking equipment if they wish. Cost of the camp is $185 and includes meals, lodging, equipment, and instruction.

Also being offered are two sessions of the popular Artists and Scientists: Nature from Two Perspectives camp for 8-13 year old children. Campers will explore forest and aquatic habitats through both artistic and scientific activities, including discovery hikes, creating art with natural materials, dramatic skits, and campfire programs. A special activity this year will be building bat boxes!

The first camp is for 3 days and 2 nights, from July 15-17, and the second is for 4 days and 3 nights, from July 29 through August 1. These camps will take place at the KOSS site in Sun Pass State Forest, near Ft. Klamath. The cost of the 2-night camp is $175, and $265 for the 3-night camp.

At the Find Your Niche in Nature camp, 12-17 year old children will have fun experiencing outdoor skills and careers related to nature, including forestry, nature photography, map-making, ecosystem restoration, and more. This camp will take place July 22-25 at the KOSS site. The cost is $250.

A 2-night Family Camp will be offered August 16-18. More information on this will become available soon.

Anyone attending two or more camps will receive a 10% discount on the second camp. Registration is online at www.klamathoutdoorschool.org. For more information, call 541-850-8218, or email kossreservations@gmail.com.
