North County shooting leads to arrest

LAPINE, Ore. - 6:00 AM on New Year’s Day, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting shots fired following an argument in the 1300 block of Linda Drive in LaPine. Jurisdiction was determined to be within Klamath County and referred to the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigating KCSO Deputies learned a resident of the location, Lance Alan Payne, 22, had an argument with another resident, the homeowner.

Payne retrieved a small-caliber rifle and shot several rounds into the floor of the home.

The house was occupied by multiple individuals including minor children, who fled the house after the shots.

Precautionary measures were taken in to consideration with the apprehension of Payne. DCSO called in an armored vehicle and the KCSO called the Special Response Team.

Payne was taken into custody upon arrival of a DCSO armored vehicle. The Special Response Team was not utilized as the incident concluded before they arrived.

Payne is being held in the Klamath County Jail on the charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and multiple counts of Menacing, and Reckless Endangering.

Klamath County Sheriff’s Office deputies were assisted by Oregon State Police and Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
