Newell Held on Charges of Attempted Murder

Sunday morning (02/11/18) at approximately 2:45am, Klamath County Emergency Dispatch (911) received a cellular phone call of an assault which was to have occurred at an unknown location on South Poe Valley Road.

Klamath County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and located one vehicle leaving the scene at high speed. The vehicle was stopped and found to occupy witnesses to the assault who informed the deputies that a victim was cut badly with a knife and was being taken to the hospital in another personal vehicle.

It was also learned the suspect, later identified as William Travis Newell (27 years of age), was left on South Poe Valley Road and it was unclear what his physical condition was. Deputies were unable to locate the suspect though the area was extensively searched throughout the early morning hours.

The victim, a 22 year old male, was interviewed by deputies at Sky Lakes Medical Center where he was being treated for serious injuries allegedly caused by a knife during an unprovoked attack.  

At approximately 7:05am, a person living in the area notified 911 Dispatch there was a person knocking on their door claiming to have been assaulted at the Aftershock Bar. Deputies responded and located William Travis Newell who had physical injuries as well. Mr. Newell was interviewed, examined by medical personnel, and then was taken into custody for the crimes of Attempted Murder, Menacing, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

At this point in the investigation it is unclear what provoked the alleged attack on the victim by William Travis Newell, however it was clear to responding deputies that alcohol intoxication was a contributing factor.
