Menlo Way structure fire caused by portable heater [VIDEO]

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore - On Tuesday, at approximately 1:50 PM, a call came into Klamath County 9-1-1 reporting a structure fire on the 1700 block of Menlo Way in Klamath Falls. The first engine from Klamath County Fire District 1 arrived to find visible flames and smoke coming from the front and side of the home.

The fire was suppressed quickly and a search of the residence found the occupant had made it out without any injury. The occupant said he woke to the smoke detector going off and began to exit the home through a window where he received help from a neighbor.

The home and its contents suffered significant fire damage.

The cause of the fire has been determined that it was from the use of a portable heater located in the living area that was used to help heat the structure.

“Make sure your smoke detectors are working properly, this smoke detector saved his life,” said Chad Tramp, Deputy Fire Marshal, KCFD1.

Helpful tips for the use of portable heaters:

  • Used for temporary use and not designed for long time use.

  • Make sure they are plugged into an electrical outlet, try not to use extension cords.

  • Make sure the heaters have the safety tip-over switches; this will cut the power to the heating elements and fan if the heater tips over.

  • Make sure the heaters are placed on a solid surface.

  • Make sure to keep the heaters away from any combustibles.
