PORTLAND, Ore. – In an extremely close game, the Lady Owls were taken down by Warner Pacific University (8-5, 4-1 CCC) in the fourth quarter, as fouls from the Owls allowed them to move from a single point lead to a 4-point lead through free throws before the final buzzer, finishing 62-58. The loss bumps Tech to 4-2 in conference play and 10-6 on the season.
"Despite the disappointment of a close loss, I'm really proud of how hard our team played," said Head Coach Scott Meredith. "It was a battle of mini-runs and they had the last one. We certainly had our chances, but Warner got twice as many foul shots as we did and that had an impact on the outcome. While Warner had 22 turnovers, we had 21 and only got 9 points from them while Warner got 22. That was the biggest factor and we need to take much better care of the ball in our upcoming games."
OIT started out strong, leading the first quarter 13-10. The second stanza saw the Knights take a 10-0 run, which pushed them ahead until the 3rd quarter, where the Lady Owls regained the lead early on but struggled to build it, eventually ending up with a 4-point advantage.
The lead changed three times in the beginning of the 4th period as the Owls struggled to gain an advantage, but Warner Pacific managed to stay ahead by a small margin, gaining their largest lead of the quarter in the final 8 second stretch.
Senior Megan Morris led Tech and tied Kendyl Cone of WPU for game high with 16 points. Seniors Nohea Waiwaiole and Bailey Nelson, along with sophomore Amanda Constant and freshman Courtney Clemmernotched 8 points apiece, with Waiwaiole also grabbing 7 rebounds.
For the Knights, Bailey Allen recorded 10 points and Cone took down 7 rebounds.
The majority of Warner Pacific's lead came from the charity stripe, earning 19 points to OIT's 8.
The Owls committed 21 turnovers to WPU's 22, though Pacific was able to take a 22-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
Tech led in the paint 34-28 but suffered at long range, with a 3-pointer shooting average of only 16.7%.
The Lady Owls will travel to Ashland, Oregon on Tuesday January 8, to play Southern Oregon University at 5:30 pm. Before returning home on January 11 and 12 when they host Corban and Northwest Christian University respectively.
