As of 9am, the Klamath Hills Fire is estimated at 55 acres, smaller than originally estimated. Firefighters conducted successful burnout operations last evening in order to strengthen and hold containment lines. Containment is now 100%.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Lower Klamath Lake Road remains closed for responder use only; no other closures or evacuations are necessary at this time.

Incident Commander Jake Barnett of Oregon Department of Forestry stated that the quick and successful control and containment of the Klamath Hills Fire was due to the strong partnerships amongst the responding agencies.

Responding agencies include Oregon Department of Forestry, Klamath County Fire District 1, Fremont-Winema National Forest, BLM Lakeview District/Klamath Falls Resource Area, Kingsley Field Fire, Klamath County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management, Merrill Police Department, and Oregon State Police.

Fire agencies in our region have elevated the fire danger to EXTREME. In extreme conditions, fires start quickly, spread furiously, and burn intensely. All fires are potentially serious. Restrictions are in place against some activities, including campfires unless in designated locations; for a full list of those restrictions visit www.scofmp.org.
