Klamath County unemployment drops to 6.3% in December

The region ended the year with employment levels down significantly from this time last year. These job losses were largely concentrated in Klamath County’s professional and business services sector where 450 jobs were lost over the past year. The employment situation remains largely unchanged over the past year in Lake County.

Klamath County
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 6.3 percent in December from 6.5 percent in November. The rate was 7.1 percent this time last year, not a statistically significant drop over the past year.

Klamath County shed 240 jobs in December, fewer losses than typically expected for this time of year.

The county lost 500 jobs over the past year (-2.2%). These losses were largely concentrated in professional and business services, which lost 450 jobs from this time last year. Manufacturing continues to post losses with employment levels down by 80 jobs from last December. Health care and other services each posted strong job growth, but these gains were not enough to overcome the large layoff event in professional and business services.

Lake County
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in December, down from 5.5 percent in November. The rate was 6.4 percent in December 2018.

Lake County lost 40 jobs in December, larger losses than typically expected this time of year. The employment situation is largely unchanged over the past year gaining 30 jobs (+1.4%).
