Henley DECA Grabs Ribbons at Districts

More than 100 students from eight high schools participated in the competition Monday

Henley High School DECA students grabbed several first-, second- and third-place finishes at the first DECA District III competition Monday at Oregon Institute of Technology.

The district includes Henley, Klamath Union, North Medford, South Medford, Ashland, Crater and Phoenix high schools and Armadillo Technical Institute.

“DECA is basically like a crash course in adulthood for kids who don’t want to wait for their first job to learn what it means to be professional and ready for the workforce,” said Luke Ovgard, Henley High School business teacher and DECA advisor. “It teaches the basics of entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality, tourism, marketing, and management, while building a broad base in soft skills and communication.”

A non-for-profit student organization, DECA has members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, China, Germany, Guam, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain.

At Monday’s competition, there were four individual events and one team event, and more than 100 students participated.

DECA individual event scoring is comprised of a test and two role plays. Students can win awards for finishing in the top three in the test, top three in Role Play 1, top three in Role Play 2, and top three Overall.

DECA team event scoring is identical but with only one role play instead of two. Students can win awards for finishing in the top three in the test, top three in Role Play, and top three overall.

Henley High individual winners:

  • DJ Hall, 3rd place, role play 1, apparel and accessories

  • Ana Hackman, 3rd place, role play 1, retail marketing

Henley High team winners:

  • Anna Edwards and Madison Garlitz, 1st place overall, 2nd place test, 3rd place role play, team hospitality.

  • Brianna Eichelkraut and Sydney Groff, 2nd place overall, 1st place role play, team hospitality

  • Dylan Huynh and Andrew Wilcher, 3rd place role play, team hospitality.
