Fourth-grade students from Dena Morosin’s class at Shasta Elementary and Kasey Bird’s class at Conger Elementary recently paired up on a goal to fill a Honda Fit and a Subaru with food for the Klamath Lake Counties Food Bank.

Last year the two classes raised about 4,200 pounds of food. This year, the two classes and Klamath Falls Honda Subaru raised nearly four times that much.

On Friday, June 1, the classes celebrated at the car dealership, revealing the magic number: 16,119 pounds. Of that, about 2,000 pounds were actual food donations. The rest was in donated dollars. Every dollar donated equates to 10 pounds of food for the food bank.

“This isn’t something that one person or one class can do,” Bird told the 50-plus students. “But when we come together, everybody does a little bit, we can make a really, really, really big difference!”

Niki Sampson, executive director of the food bank, said there are about 8,000 children in families Klamath and Lake counties that get help from the food bank.

“I can’t do it by myself,” Sampson said, then pointed to students in the two classes. “I have to have your help, and your help, and your help to make it happen.”

Students in Morosin’s class said they learned valuable lessons from participating in the food drive.

“I learned that our class (any class) can do everything to help my community and help kids with no food,” said Summer Johnson.

“I learned how if we all work together for kids and the food bank that is all that matters,” said Chloe McFarlan.

“Something that I learned about life is that there is always a way to help other kids and adults,” said Nixon Brown.

“Something that I learned about our community is they are awesome for what they do,” said Ronit Patel.

The Honda and Subaru crews had a happy rivalry between which car would raise the most. Subaru won by about 800 pounds. Subaru had 8,465 pounds while Honda had 7,654.

“All of you worked really hard to earn over 16,000 pounds. That is an incredible donation that you gave to the food bank,” Blake Underriner, general manager at Klamath Falls Honda Subaru, told the students. “Thank you so much on behalf of Klamath Falls Honda Subaru for letting us be a part of this: 12,000 pounds over last year!”
