Board of Commissioners return $776,539 to road fund

KLAMATH COUNTY, Ore. - The Klamath County Commissioners, with the Klamath County Sheriff, are pleased to announce the Commissioners’ decision to return $776,539.69 in unspent funds to the County Road Reserve Fund.  

During the most recent budget process, the Commissioners and Budget Committee allocated a portion of funds from the Road Reserves to support Sheriff’s patrols at the current service levels. 

Since January 2017 the Commissioners and Budget Committee working together with Sheriff Kaber and his staff have allocated additional funding that has resulted in the ability to maintain the Sheriff’s patrol schedule while fulfilling our contracts with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), US Forest Service and Oregon State Marine Board more effectively.  

In addition, three more detective positions have been added to investigate crimes.  These changes have also allowed the Sheriff and his staff to re-allocate an Administrative Sergeant’s position to Patrol for North Klamath County.

At the end of the funding cycle, the Sheriff had $776,539.69 in unused funds.

This savings is the direct result of great fiscal management by the entire Sheriff’s Office Staff, as well as salary savings resulting from the ongoing effort to fill vacant positions.  

In a fiscally prudent move, the Commissioners decided the most appropriate action is to return those funds to road reserves.  

The Board of Commissioners and the Sheriff continue to collaborate on effectively utilizing tax dollars to preserve both public safety and the county’s infrastructure (roads and bridges).
